Ozone and oxygen

Off-gassing

Off-gassing is the release of a gas from a material or an enclosure into the surrounding air. Around an ozone sauna it means residual ozone escaping the cabinet into the treatment room — during a session through the neck opening and door seals, and afterwards when the doors are opened.

Also called outgassing, ozone release

The general meaning

Off-gassing is any release of gas from a material or space into the air around it — the smell of a new car interior is off-gassing of volatile organic compounds. In an ozone context the gas of interest is ozone itself.

Where it happens with a sauna

  • During the session, at the neck opening and anywhere the door seals are imperfect. A lot of steam suddenly escaping usually means the bottom door rubbers have been kicked out of place; anything letting steam out is also letting gas out.
  • At the end, when the doors are opened and the air inside the sauna mixes with room air.
  • From materials, as ozone-degraded rubber and plastic break down over time.

Why it matters more to staff than to the client

The client has one session. Staff are in that room for every session on the timetable. Occupational limits cited by the US Environmental Protection Agency sit around 0.1 parts per million over an eight-hour average, which is a very small number next to a sauna running at 47 ppm inside.

What reduces it

The gas decays on its own: the generator stops producing five minutes before the session ends, ozone’s half-life inside the hot sauna is roughly 10 to 20 minutes, and moisture inside the sauna converts some of it to hydrogen peroxide. Ordinary ventilation clears what escapes: an open door and window, and an extractor fan if you want one. Keeping the door rubbers seated helps too.

Nobody should lean into the cabinet, put their face into it, or open the doors while ozone is running. Off-gassing is managed by design and by habit: ventilate the room, keep the seals in good order, and stay out of the cabinet.

Why it matters here

This is the exposure that concerns staff rather than clients. Someone running six sessions a day spends the whole day in that room, which is why ventilation belongs in the plan when you set a treatment room up.
