Operating your sauna

Can I run my ozone sauna and oxygen concentrator on an inverter or generator during load shedding?

South Africa only

Yes, on an inverter. A Salvagente ozone sauna and its oxygen concentrator draw 1,750 W in total, and a 3 kVA or larger inverter will run both. A generator of that size can run them too, but we do not recommend it, because generator supply fluctuates.

The numbers you need

  • Total draw, sauna plus oxygen concentrator, is 1,750 W. Power: 220 V / 10 A. For the 110 V versions (ordered from the international section): Red Light 110 V / 13.5 A; Standard and Deluxe 110 V / 11 A. The oxygen concentrator runs on its own separate socket (300–450 W). A 110 V sauna needs its own dedicated circuit. Before delivery, ask a qualified electrician to confirm that your circuit and socket can carry the sauna’s rated current continuously.
  • A 3 kVA or larger inverter will run the sauna and the concentrator together.
  • A generator of the same rating will also run them, but we do not recommend it. Generator output fluctuates, and fluctuating supply is hard on the heating element and the control electronics.

Size the installation with an electrician against those figures and the nameplate on your own unit. A heating element and a compressor-driven concentrator are both demanding loads, and the concentrator’s compressor draws a surge on start-up that a rating chosen from running watts alone will not cover — another reason to leave headroom above 3 kVA rather than sitting exactly on it.

If the power is about to go

Shut down properly rather than letting the supply drop out under you. The wrong switch-off order can damage the sauna.

  1. Switch the ozone sauna off.
  2. Switch the oxygen concentrator off.
  3. Unplug at the wall socket, which also protects the electronics from the surge when supply returns.

If a client is in the sauna, get them out, wrapped up and warm before you deal with the equipment. Do not resume a part-finished session on the assumption that the settings survived.

One thing not to do

Do not run the sauna on backup power with the concentrator left off to save load. Running the sauna for a prolonged period without the oxygen concentrator will damage and burn out the ozone generator. If your backup will not carry both, run neither.
