How ozone therapy works

What do ppm and mg/h mean on an ozone sauna, and why is the output adjustable?

Parts per million (ppm) is the ozone concentration in the air; milligrams per hour (mg/h) is the mass of ozone the generator produces. Our saunas run a 500 mg/h generator on a constant 2 litre per minute oxygen feed, which gives about 47 ppm in the sauna's air. Ten display levels adjust output in 10% steps.

Two different measurements

  • Concentration (ppm) describes how much ozone is present in a given volume of air at any moment. It is a ratio, not a quantity.
  • Output (mg/h) describes how much ozone the generator produces over time. It is a mass.

The two are linked by the gas flow rate, so all three numbers belong together.

What our three figures mean

We publish 47 ppm, a 2 litre per minute flow and 500 mg/h, and they describe one system:

  • 500 mg/h is the ozone generator’s output at full setting.
  • 2 l/min is the oxygen flow from the concentrator into the generator. It is constant and does not change with the ozone level.
  • 47 ppm is the ozone concentration inside the entire air volume of the sauna at that feed — not the concentration in the delivery line. It fluctuates from session to session, because the size, body structure and weight of the person inside change how much air is in the sauna around them.

The ppm figure therefore describes the air you are sitting in, once the ozone has mixed through the sauna.

Why it is adjustable

The Standard and Deluxe cabinets carry a digital display with 10-level ozone adjustment; the Deluxe uses a 4.3 inch full-colour TFT screen, and the Red Light has its own. Each level up is a 10% increase in the generator’s output, so level 10 is full output and the lower levels are proportionate steps below it. Our guidance is to build up rather than start at maximum: settle the number of sessions first, then raise output gradually. Setting a person’s level, frequency and progression is a decision for the practitioner supervising them, who should hold a medical history. If a skin reaction appears, stop and speak to a doctor before resuming.

Heat interacts with concentration

Ozone begins to disintegrate at 40 °C and faster above that, so cabinet temperature is not independent of the ozone you are exposed to. Our starting range for a first session is 30–37 °C depending on comfort.
