Operating your sauna

What type of water should I use in my ozone sauna?

Use only verified distilled water in a Salvagente ozone steam sauna. Distilled water leaves nothing behind when it boils off, so no descaling is needed. Tap water, spring water, softened water and bottled water with minerals added back all leave scale in the steam side and should not be used.

Our instruction is short: use only verified distilled water. “Verified” matters, because a good deal of water sold as purified is not distilled.

Why it matters

Steam leaves behind whatever was dissolved in the water. Distilled water carries almost nothing, so the steam side of the sauna stays clean and no descaling is required when the correct water is used. Mineral-rich water leaves deposits in the water path and on the element every time it boils off, and that build-up is what shortens the life of a steam generator.

What to watch for

  • Many bottled waters marketed as “purified” have minerals added back for taste. Check the label rather than assuming.
  • Domestic reverse osmosis units are often fitted with a remineralising cartridge for drinking water, which makes the output unsuitable.
  • Softened tap water is not de-mineralised water. Softening exchanges one mineral for another; it does not remove the dissolved solids.

How much you will use

The bottle we supply covers four to eight sessions, depending on the temperature setting. A hotter sauna makes more steam and gets through water faster. If the water runs low or empty, the sauna sounds a warning and pauses the session, so keep a sealed container of distilled water beside the sauna in a busy clinic.

Distilled water is for the sauna, not for the client

Keep the two apart: distilled water goes in the bottle at the back of the sauna, and drinking water goes in the client’s glass.
