Cell biology and proposed mechanisms

Modulation

Modulation means adjusting the level, timing or intensity of a biological process. Attached to a named process, as in photobiomodulation, it is a precise technical term. Used on its own, it is a general summary word.

Also called modulate, modulatory effect

The precise uses

In pharmacology, “modulate” is used deliberately when an agent’s effect is bidirectional or context-dependent — raising an over-suppressed response and damping an over-active one, rather than simply pushing in one direction. Photobiomodulation is a formal name for a defined field.

How to read it

Used on its own, “modulation” does not say up or down, by how much, in whom, or measured how. That makes it a summary term rather than a measurement. Where a specific finding exists, it will name the marker, the direction and the study.

Why it matters here

It is a word you will meet often in writing about ozone and light. Attached to a named process, such as photobiomodulation, it means something specific; on its own it is a general summary rather than a measurement.
