How ozone therapy works

What does "medical ozone" mean, and why do some sites use the term?

Medical ozone means ozone generated from a pure medical oxygen source, such as a medical oxygen concentrator or medical oxygen cylinder, rather than from ambient air. We use the term to describe that supply chain, and we advise using only equipment that creates ozone from a medical oxygen source.

The definition we publish

The term medical ozone refers to ozone created from a medical oxygen source. If pure oxygen is not used, impurities pass through the ozone generator too. Our instruction is to always use an ozone sauna that creates ozone from a medical oxygen source.

Why an oxygen feed rather than room air

An ozone generator does not filter anything. It applies a high-voltage charge — normally a corona discharge, a cold plasma that splits O2 molecules so their fragments form O3 — to whatever gas passes through, so whatever is in the feed gas ends up in the output. Air is mostly nitrogen, so an air-fed generator also produces nitrogen oxides. A concentrated oxygen feed removes most of that variable.

Two practical consequences follow:

  • Every model we make ships with a medical oxygen concentrator rather than leaving the feed gas to the buyer. The units we supply are 5 l/min at 93% purity, plus or minus 3%.
  • Published output ratings only mean anything against a defined feed gas. A generator run on room air is not producing the same output.

It also implies materials

Ozone attacks most materials it contacts, so the gas path has to be ozone-resistant rather than natural rubber, latex or nylon. Ours uses 304 and 316 stainless steel and silicone. The same principle separates a purpose-built device from an improvised one.

What the term describes

“Medical ozone” describes how the gas is made. On its own it is not a statement about regulatory approval, clinical indication or licensing in your market. The useful specifics are the materials: 304 and 316 stainless steel and silicone.

We sell our ozone saunas as wellness equipment, not medical devices. Regulation of ozone therapy itself still differs between countries.
