Getting started and your first session
What do I wear in an ozone sauna, and do I have to undress?
We suggest wearing as little as possible in an ozone steam sauna, or nothing at all, because clothing sits between the ozone and your skin. Only your head is visible once the doors close, so most clients undress fully and sit on a towel. A clinic will give you privacy.
An ozone sauna works by transdermal delivery — a substance given across the skin rather than by mouth, injection or breathing. Clothing sits between the ozone and the skin and reduces the area exposed. That is the whole reason for the recommendation. In practice:
- At an outlet you are shown to the room, given privacy to undress and a towel to sit on, and the operator returns once you are seated with the doors closed.
- At home, the same applies without the logistics.
- Underwear is a personal choice. It reduces skin exposure but does not stop the session working.
- Tattoos are not a barrier to a session, and you can cover one if you would rather. See I have tattoos. Can I use an ozone sauna? in the safety section for what we publish about ozone and ink.
Take a second towel for after the session. Sweat residue often marks the towel you sit on, which is normal.
