Safety, contraindications and screening

Can I use an ozone sauna if I am pregnant?

No. Our guidance is explicit: do not have an ozone sauna session while pregnant, under any circumstances, because sauna heat raises the mother's heart rate and with it the baby's. Sessions can resume after the birth and after you have stopped breastfeeding.

Pregnancy is the one item on the contraindication list phrased without qualification: not under any circumstances. The reason is thermal rather than chemical — a sauna session increases a mother’s heart rate, thereby increasing the baby’s heart rate.

One thing worth understanding, because it is the commonest source of confusion: the figure on the sauna display is the temperature of the air, not your core body temperature — the temperature of your deep organs, which the body normally holds close to 37 °C. A sauna set at 37 °C does not mean your body stays at 37 °C. That is why turning the heat down is not offered as a workaround here.

For operators screening clients, this means:

  • Ask directly about pregnancy and breastfeeding at intake, and again at each visit rather than once at sign-up.
  • Do not offer a reduced-temperature or reduced-ozone alternative as a workaround. The exclusion covers the session, not a setting.
  • Record the answer on the intake form.

Sessions can resume once the baby is born and breastfeeding has stopped. Anyone trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatment should put the question to their obstetrician, midwife or fertility specialist before booking.
