Safety, contraindications and screening
Who should not use an ozone sauna, and how to screen safely before a session.
Questions (16)
- Is ozone dangerous?Ozone is harmful to the lungs and eyes if it is inhaled or reaches high concentrations in the air. In a Salvagente ozone steam sauna your head stays outside the sauna and the neck opening is covered, so you do not breathe the ozone. Treat inhalation as the main risk.
- Why does my head stay outside the ozone sauna?Ozone is toxic to the lungs, so we build every Salvagente ozone sauna with your head outside the cabinet and a cover over the neck opening. That keeps the ozone on your skin and out of your airway. Never use a sauna or cabinet that encloses your head with ozone running.
- Do I need eye protection in the Red Light ozone sauna? In the Salvagente Red Light ozone sauna your head stays outside the sauna, away from the direction of the LEDs, and an automatic cutoff switches the lights off the moment the doors open. That is how eye exposure is managed. Keep your eyes closed or turned away if you can see the emitters.
- Who should not use an ozone sauna?Do not use an ozone sauna if you are pregnant or menstruating, have active bleeding, a platelet disorder such as haemophilia, thrombosis, active hyperthyroidism, any heart condition or a pacemaker, are an active alcoholic, or have had a heart attack or stroke in the last three months. This list is not complete: if you have any diagnosed condition, ask your doctor first.
- Should I speak to my doctor before booking an ozone sauna session?Speak to your doctor before an ozone sauna session if you have any diagnosed condition, take prescription medication or are simply unsure. Our guidance tells anyone with a heart condition, a pacemaker, thyroid disease or a clotting disorder to consult a healthcare professional first, and everyone to check when in doubt.
- Can I use an ozone sauna if I am pregnant? No. Our guidance is explicit: do not have an ozone sauna session while pregnant, under any circumstances, because sauna heat raises the mother's heart rate and with it the baby's. Sessions can resume after the birth and after you have stopped breastfeeding.
- Can children or older people use an ozone sauna? There is no minimum age, upper age limit or child-specific session guidance for our ozone steam saunas, so both children and older clients need a doctor's opinion first. Where a child does use the sauna, constant supervision is required. Heat tolerance, heart conditions and hydration are the cautions that matter most.
- Can I use an ozone sauna if I have a pacemaker or metal implants?Ozone therapy is prohibited if you have a pacemaker, because the far infrared in the sauna might interfere with it, and that covers every model in the range. For any other implant — metal plates, joint replacements, stents, insulin pumps — ask the specialist who manages the device before you book.
- Is the heat in an ozone sauna a problem if I have a heart condition or high blood pressure?Do not use an ozone sauna if you have any heart condition, because heat increases the strain on the heart. Our saunas have automatic temperature control, and we recommend first sessions at 30 °C to 37 °C. If you have high or low blood pressure, ask your doctor before you book.
- Can I drink alcohol or take my medication before an ozone sauna session?Leave at least 8 hours between your last alcoholic drink and an ozone sauna session, and at least 4 hours after the session before drinking again. If you take any medication, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether to time your session around it. Never skip, delay or move a prescribed dose to fit a session.
- I have tattoos. Can I use an ozone sauna? We know of no evidence that a session affects a tattoo. If you are concerned, cover it during the session.
- Can I use an ozone sauna if I have an open wound or have recently had surgery? You should not use an ozone sauna with an open wound or soon after surgery. Anyone with active bleeding from any site should not have a session, because ozone thins the blood. Our guidance is to wait two to three months after major surgery, and to check with your surgeon first.
- What should I do if I feel unwell or too hot inside the ozone sauna? To get out, open the doors and step out. To stop the ozone, switch the sauna off at its wall socket once you're out.
- Does someone need to supervise an ozone sauna session, and what should the client sign first? You can use the sauna on your own at home, as long as you can get in and out unaided. In a business, a trained person must be present and within call during every client's session, and a child needs constant supervision. Clients should complete a health intake form, and read and sign the outlet's terms, before a first ozone sauna session.
- Is it safe to use an ozone sauna on my own at home, with no one else there?Yes, you can use the sauna on your own at home, as long as you can get in and out unaided. Before each session, tell someone that you're starting and how long it will take, keep your phone within reach, know where the sauna's wall switch is, and check who should not use an ozone sauna. If you feel unwell, light-headed or too hot, open the doors and step out at once, then follow the steps on feeling unwell. Don't use it alone if you've been drinking alcohol, feel unwell, or your doctor has advised you to have someone with you. In a business, a trained person must be present and within call during every client's session.
- Can I have an ozone sauna session during my period? No. Menstruation is a contraindication for ozone sauna sessions. If you are having your period, wait until it has finished and then book as normal — there is no additional waiting time afterwards. Operators ask about it at intake as a routine screening question, alongside pregnancy, medication and the rest of your health history.
