Safety, contraindications and screening

I have tattoos. Can I use an ozone sauna?

We know of no evidence that a session affects a tattoo. If you are concerned, cover it during the session.

Tattoos come up often because ozone is a strong oxidant — a substance that takes electrons from whatever it touches, chemically altering it — and tattoo ink is a foreign particle sitting in the skin.

Practical points:

  • Covering the tattoo during the steam session is an optional extra precaution, not a requirement.
  • If a tattoo is large, recent or of particular value to you, have a word with your tattoo artist as well.
  • Permanent make-up, microblading and cosmetic pigment follow the same reasoning, and the practitioner who did the work is the person to ask.

One important limit: a new or healing tattoo is an open wound, and anyone with active bleeding from any site should not have a session. Wait until a fresh tattoo has fully healed, and ask the studio when that will be.
