Can I use an ozone sauna if I have an open wound or have recently had surgery?

You should not use an ozone sauna with an open wound or soon after surgery. Anyone with active bleeding from any site should not have a session, because ozone thins the blood. Our guidance is to wait two to three months after major surgery, and to check with your surgeon first.

Ozone thins the blood, and wounds and surgery are where that matters most:

  • Active bleeding from any site — no sessions.
  • Major surgery — wait two to three months. The risk is bleeding, or a blood clot loosening.
  • Thrombosis and platelet disorders — separately excluded for the same reason.
  • Menstruation — wait until the period has finished, then book as normal.

Minor procedures, dental extractions, biopsies, endoscopies, caesarean recovery, unhealed pressure sores, ulcers, surgical drains and small cuts and grazes are not covered by a blanket rule. Where a client sits in that grey area, the decision belongs to their surgeon, not to an operator or a website.

Steam and heat on broken skin are also uncomfortable, and broken skin in shared equipment is an infection-control question quite apart from bleeding.

Cleaning between clients. Every model has disinfection options, always run with no one inside the sauna. The Red Light also has an automatic ozone disinfection cycle, started with one tap on the screen and run with no one inside the sauna, between sessions or whenever time allows; the sauna shows a warning for the cycle. Ozone is a recognised disinfectant. Treat it as a feature rather than a validated sterilisation step: disinfection depends on concentration multiplied by contact time at a stated humidity against a stated organism — an O3 disinfection cycle — and sweat and skin oils on the surfaces consume ozone. The cycle disinfects; it does not sterilise. Wipe the sauna down after every client and clean it to whatever standard your health authority sets for shared equipment. Run the disinfection cycle only with no one inside the sauna. Never start it with a person in the sauna, and never get in while it is running or flushing.
