My ozone sauna is not producing ozone. What are the likely causes?
If a latex glove held at your ozone sauna's outlet develops no hole, check that the oxygen concentrator is switched on and running at its 2 litres per minute feed, that no pipe is pinched, blocked or disconnected, and that the fitting holding the ozone pipe inside the sauna has not been screwed on too tightly.
Work through these in order before concluding that the ozone generator itself has failed. The generator is a corona discharge cell, which makes ozone by passing a high-voltage field through oxygen, so no oxygen means no ozone. In practice most no-ozone reports come down to the feed, not the cell.
1. The oxygen supply
- Is the oxygen concentrator switched on at the wall and at the machine?
- Is it delivering its normal feed? The sauna runs on a constant 2 litres per minute; a concentrator turned down below that will produce little or no usable ozone and often sets off the sauna’s air flow alarm as well.
- Is the concentrator drawing air freely, with clean filters and space around it?
2. The pipework
- Is any pipe pinched — under a castor, against a wall, or trapped by the cabinet?
- Is any pipe blocked or kinked?
- Has a pipe come off a fitting at either end?
3. The internal fitting
The fitting that holds the ozone pipe inside the sauna can be screwed on too tightly, which restricts or stops flow. This typically happens after someone has been handling it. Backing it off slightly restores flow.
4. Retest
After each change, repeat the latex glove test at the ozone outlet. Do not fall back on smelling for ozone: it is toxic to inhale and operators become desensitised to the odour, so it is neither a safe nor a reliable check.
One thing that will kill a generator
Running the sauna for a prolonged period without the oxygen concentrator on will damage and burn out the ozone generator, and can cause further burn damage. If a session has been run that way, say so when you contact us — it changes the diagnosis.
When to call us
If the concentrator is running, the pipework is clear, the fitting is not overtightened and a glove still shows no damage, contact us. Do not open the cabinet: there is high-voltage equipment inside, and the warranty does not cover damage caused by repair work not done by us or by a person following our instructions.
